Are Expandable Hoses any good? An Honest Review

Spread the love

Whether watering your lawn, washing your car, or misting your flowers, we are always looking for the best hose to get the job done. The newest garden hose that has consumers scrambling to test out on their lawns is an expandable hose!

Although less durable than standard hoses, expandable hoses are smaller and cheaper than a standard rubber hose. If cared for properly, they can last almost as long as a rubber hose while providing space-saving and self-draining benefits.

However, before purchasing an expandable hose for your garden you may be wondering whether or not these hoses are truly up to the task. Below you will find a completely honest review detailing both the pros and cons of expandable garden hoses.

Expandable Hoses

Since expandable hoses are still relatively new to the market, what they are and how they work are still relatively new to most of us gardeners.

A normal garden hose can be heavy, hard to store, and causes problems such as kinks while in use. Expandable hoses were created to combat each of these problems.

A rule of thumb for expandable hoses is that they expand up to three times their original size and then shrink back to that same size in a matter of seconds once the water is turned off.

As the hose returns to its original size, the shrinking force allows the hose to drains itself out. In doing so your expandable hose is protected from bacteria build-up (another problem common in a regular hose).

Expandable hoses are built to work in all of the extremes temperatures you may encounter during your time in the garden. And once you are done with the hose, you are able to store the hose easier in a much smaller space than a regular hose.

Now that we have a general idea of what an expandable hose is and how this type of hose works, we can start looking at some of the pros and cons of using an expandable hose in your garden.

Pros

While some may assume that all hoses do the same thing, expandable hoses prove this statement to be false.

Before we look at all the pros and cons of using an expandable hose, take a look at the following chart and you will see how a few different types of hoses “measure up” with each other.

As you can see there are several differences between each of the different types of hoses. A few notable differences include

One of the first and most noticeable pros to using an expandable hose is the size. While a regular hose remains the same size all the time, when the water is turned off, an expandable hose shrinks down to a third of its full size. This expandable feature allows you to have the same efficiency you would find in a regular hose and store the hose in a third of the normal amount of space needed!

That is really the main selling point of an expandable hose. Portability. That small hose has a lot of value because normal hoses are usually such a space hog in the yard, especially for something that you rarely use. Instead of having a hose that looks ugly in your lawn, it can be something that sits on a shelf in the garage that can be pulled out easily when it is needed.

Because an expandable hose shrinks to be so small, this means that the overall hose is much lighter than other normal garden hoses. In fact, most expandable garden hoses weigh up to only one pound!

We have all been there, pulling the hose across the lawn, and suddenly, no water pressure! After careful inspection, we find a kink in the hose. Possibly one of the most notable features of an expandable hose is that they never kink!

Along with never kinking, expandable garden hoses never get tangled as well! Simply turn on the water and watch the hose untangle itself!

Unlike regular garden hoses, expandable hoses are built with extra sturdy brass fittings! These fittings are much stronger than those on a regular hose and can withstand over 100 pounds of pressure.

Cons

With all of the wonderful benefits discussed above, how could there be anything wrong with an expandable hose? Unfortunately, as exciting as these new hoses are, there are several critical flaws in their design.

The first and possibly most frustrating flaw with expandable hoses is that you can not set down the hose while the water is still running. If you do so, a few different things can happen. Either the hose will lose water pressure, or the hose will begin to shrink back to its original size. As the hose shrinks back to its original size, the hose is likely to spray water in every which direction.

The second con happens to be an effect resulting from the same shrinking problem. All of us know that you need a garden hose in order to use your sprinkler on your lawn. However, when placing your sprinkler with an expandable hose, you will need to do so with the water on.

Why? Well, if you try placing the sprinkler with the water off, the hose will begin immediately retracting and will likely bring your sprinkler with it!

In order to avoid your flowers or vegetables from being smashed by a flying sprinkler, you will have to be holding the sprinkler when the water turns off as well. Sadly, this means that in placing and removing your sprinkler you are likely to get drenched!

Because expandable hoses are made of such lightweight, flexible material they are more likely to be punctured or torn with extensive use. These tears and punctures lead to leaks and low water pressure.

As well as tearing throughout the hose, the plastic or metal steel ends tend to cause wear and rips in the material. Once again, rendering your hose unusable.

In the following video, you will see an expandable hose bursting and leaking water everywhere.

As you can see, expandable hoses are not the most durable hoses on the market and overall, expandable hoses are not likely to last very long if they are used for any extremely hardy tasks (which most garden hoses are).

Conclusion

As we saw above, expandable hoses, while they do have some fantastic advantages to their use, have some critical flaws when it comes to enduring garden work. While an expandable hose might make completing yard work an easier, lighter task, the possibility of your expandable hose breaking may not be worth the hype.

If you choose to use an expandable hose in your garden, make sure the hose you choose is of higher quality. Otherwise, the chances of you needing to replace the hose quite frequently are rather high.

For any task requiring the hose to be left idle, such as watering the lawn with a sprinkler, an expandable hose may not be the best choice of hose. If you need to set down the hose and leave it running alone for any reason, I suggest returning to the use of a regular hose for completing these kinds of tasks.

However, if you are simply looking for a leisurely use hose, such as misting over garden beds or flowers, an expandable hose may be the perfect match for you. Not to mention that the hose will be easy to carry across the yard and a breeze to store!

The only downsides to this type of hose are that the strong coils can be difficult to stretch out at first. Also, due to the narrow diameter of the hose (only 3/8 inch!), the water pressure is rather low when compared to normal hoses.

Rocky Mountain Goods “Landscapers Select Flat Garden Hose 50 Feet with Reel

Another unique style of the hose is the Rocky Mountain Goods “Landscapers Select Flat Garden Hose”. This hose is 50 feet long, self-coiling, and goes flat when not in use! Yes, that is right I said flat!

Rocky Mountain Goods "Landscapers Select Flat Garden Hose 50 Feet with Reel - Includes 10 Pattern Spray Nozzle - Built in Water Wringer - Easy Wind Reel with Built-in Handle and Stand

Rather than having the hose coil or shrink to save space or reduce the weight of the hose, Rocky Mountain Goods created a 50-foot hose, small enough and light enough to be held in one hand.

A lot of expandable hoses still have the problem of being a mess when they lose their shape, but with this type of coiling hose, you can have a really nice way of storing things.

The next benefit of the Rocky Mountain Goods hose is that the hose never kinks!

The Rocky Mountain Goods hose gets excellent water pressure with or without a spray nozzle on. Be sure that if you use a spray nozzle on this hose not to remove the nozzle without de-pressurizing the hose first.

This type of hose is a great option for those that want a lot of control over their hose without the weight and weakness that comes with other hoses.

If you are interested in a hose that is a little different, then this is the one for you. This is not the same as a lot of the expandable or rubber hoses out there, but instead is more of a hybrid hose.

Some of the Amazon reviews mention that this product can be frustrating to wind and unwind, but really that is just a lot of people that don’t know how to handle the equipment. It is worth mentioning though.
