Everyone loves outdoor grilling, right? Firing up the BBQ and cooking some delicious food for friends and family right there in the great outdoors is a weekend activity loved by many. While the grilling part is great, the clean up afterward is not so fun—and we’re not just talking about washing up the crockery!
Cleaning a BBQ is definitely the worst part of owning a grill, but it is also extremely important. A dirty grill will have a negative impact on your food, affecting both its taste and appearance. Grill Brush Reviews
1. GRILLART Kona Bristle-Free Barbecue Grill Brush
We will start off our list with a product from GRILLART. The Kona barbecue grill brush is of a bristle-free design. It incorporates tough steel loops to form a high-quality brush head.
The product features a total length of 18 inches, most of which is the comfortable and ergonomic handle. The brush head is a triple mount of wrapped stainless steel, with looser looped steel at the brush edges. The brush head is mounted to the handle with twisted steel for added strength. The brush comes with a 10-year guarantee.
What’s to like about the GRILLART Kona Bristle-Free Barbecue Grill Brush
We were very impressed to see multiple cleaning surfaces mounted to this brush. The main brush is of a very tight, very rigid braid of stainless steel. This is a very tough and rugged construction that allows you to apply a lot of pressure to scrub away baked-on dirt and debris.
To complement the brush head, there are looser coils of steel to the side that will be better for lifting and removing larger pieces of looser surface debris. The handle is nice and long and will keep your arm out of the heat of the grill during cleaning.
A 10-year guarantee is a great touch from the manufacturer, and you won’t find many other brands being so generous! We also thought it was good to see that the brush is suitable for use on a range of grill bar materials, such as ceramic, steel, and iron.
What’s not to like about the GRILLART Kona Bristle-Free Barbecue Grill Brush
The rigid coils make it easy to scrub the top of the grill bars, but they don’t bend around the bar material too easily. This means that you would need to apply more pressure to get the brush to clean the side of the grill bars. You do need to put a bit more effort in then, but this brush will reward that with a gleaming grill.
- checkTwo distinct cleaning surfaces
- checkRust-resistant, stainless steel construction
- checkComes with a 10-year guarantee
- checkWorks with all grill types
- checkNo sharp edges
- Hard to clean
- Rigid bristles require pressure
- No scraping edge
2. BBQ-Aid Barbecue Grill Brush and Scraper
Our next item is this gorgeous-looking barbecue grill brush from BBQ-Aid. While the all-natural Acacia wood handle is the eye-grabbing feature, what else is this brush bringing to the market?
This brush is a traditional bristle-style brush. That means the brush head is made up of thousands of bristles, all made from stainless steel. The brush is 15 inches long, roughly half of which is an ergonomic Acacia wood handle.
The end of the brush head is tipped with a scraper blade. This brush is listed as being safe to use on a wide variety of surfaces including charbroil and ceramic coated.
What’s to like about the BBQ-Aid Barbecue Grill Brush and Scraper
The handle is the big selling point of this brush. It is designed to feel great in the hand and is also wide and long enough to allow for two-handed scrubbing to really apply pressure. The brush head contains a rectangle-shaped, steel, bristle-packed brush. It measures around 3 x 5 inches, which is a pretty wide cleaning area.
We also like that the brush head is crowned with a built-in scraping blade to let you tackle really baked-on dirt and debris. This is a premium-quality brush made with exceptional materials. It is a good bet if you need something that can regularly tackle stubborn grills and get them shining.
What’s not to like about the BBQ-Aid Barbecue Grill Brush and Scraper
As we said, this is a premium product, so it does come with a premium price tag. Nevertheless, it’s not that expensive. In fact, it’s not even the most expensive on the list. 15 inches is not an ideal length; we prefer a bit more length on the brush to protect your arm from the heat of the grill.
All in all, though, this is a very well-designed and well-made bristle brush.
- checkCleans efficiently
- checkWide scrubbing surface
- checkComfortable wood handle
- checkCan be used on a number of grill surfaces
- checkHas a reliable scraper
- Potential to lose bristles
- Only 15 inches long
3. Grillaholics Essentials Grill Brush
Next up, we have a grill brush that is listed as an “Essentials” grill brush by its manufacturer. What that means, in reality, is a lower-priced product than many other brushes on this list.
Unfortunately, this begs the question: what have Grillaholics trimmed to get to that price tag?
This brush has a total length of 18 inches. Most of that length is taken up by its simple plastic handle. The brush head is installed with the bristles at a 90-degree angle to the brush. This is a traditional bristle style of grill brush.
What’s to like about the Grillaholics Essentials Grill Brush
The big stand out to this design has to be the large brush head. At 5.5 inches (out of a total length of 18 inches), this brush delivers a very high degree of brush surface. Add in the fact that the bristles are mounted at a 90-degree angle, and you have a tool here that will allow you to really scrub away baked-on dirt and debris.
Other than that, the brush is relatively basic, living up to it’s “essentials” tag. It has a strong and sturdy design and the handle, while very straightforward, is designed to be comfortable and tough. We also liked that the bristles have been triple machine-tested. This has been done to try to avoid the possibility of it coming loose.
What’s not to like about the Grillaholics Essentials Grill Brush
Whenever a brush has features trimmed to get the price down, the first casualty is always the scraper blade. This tool has a huge and very tough brush head, so it should cope well enough with tackling tough, dried-on food waste. Still, it’s always a shame to see the scraper missing, as it could have been such a useful feature.
- checkHuge brush head
- checkGood value for money
- checkSafe and easy to use
- checkWorks on all types of grills
- checkTested and proven to be hard-wearing
- No scraper edge
- Bristles could come loose
4. Backyard Dudes Brass Grill Brush
Our next product is this great little brush from Backyard Dudes. Boasting a relatively uncommon brass construction, it is made right here in the U.S.A. to ensure quality and reliability. Apart from these eye-catching points though, what else does it bringing to the table?
This brush is available as a 12-, 15-, or 16-inch grill brush. No matter the handle length, all models come with a seven-inch-wide brush head. The brush is equipped with brass bristles.
As mentioned earlier, the brush is made in the U.S. The company is proud to say that this brush was designed and crafted by American workers using American brass and steel. With your convenience in mind, this brush was made to be dishwasher safe.
What’s to like about the Backyard Dudes Brass Grill Brush
The first stand out feature has to be the fact that the brush head is equipped with brass bristles. This material is much gentler than stainless steel that is found on most other contemporary grill brush designs. This makes it ideal for use on more sensitive grill surfaces, such as porcelain-coated cast iron.
The brush has a comfortable and attractive “peppermill” style handle that we liked a lot. Add that handle to the attractive nature of the brush head, and you have a very good-looking brush here. We also really liked the fact that this brush is safe to be cleaned in the dishwasher (albeit only in the top rack). Cleaning the grill is work enough, so it’s really great that the brush itself is easy to clean.
What’s not to like about the Backyard Dudes Brass Grill Brush
The brush is a little on the small side, especially in the 12-inch sizing. Even the largest brush (at 16 inches) is still smaller than many other models on the market. This means that this brush will be fine on smaller grills but will struggle on bigger, family-sized models.
- checkGentler than other grill brushes
- checkDishwasher-safe yet heavy-duty construction
- checkMade using high-quality materials
- checkSimple and straightforward design
- Only 12 to 16 inches long
- Brass struggles with tough dirt
5. Alpha Grillers Grill Brush
We’ll finish up the list with this brush from Alpha Grillers. This product comes at a very low price tag—by far the lowest on the list, in fact. Apart from the fact that it offers great value for money, does it offer anything else that interests you?
This brush has a total length of 18 inches. The handle is molded plastic and is thick enough to allow two-handed scrubbing easily. The brush head features a triple-brush design with stainless steel bristles that ensure effective and efficient cleaning.
What’s to like about the Alpha Grillers Grill Brush
This is certainly more of a basic, entry-level design when compared to some other brushes on the list. It is a simple grill brush made of simple materials, which makes it not necessarily a bad thing! This simplicity, for example, translates to a very low price tag.
Now, the brush itself is simple, that’s true. However, it is highly effective in getting rid of dirt. It is nice and sturdy and can stand up to a pretty rigorous scrubbing action. The handle is comfortable and thick, and the brush heads are made from stainless steel, which translates to good scrubbing action and a rust-free life.
There is really not much more to say. This brush is simple but reasonably effective, and its best selling point is the low, low price.
What’s not to like about the Alpha Grillers Grill Brush
The negative of such a low price is that some things will be missing. In this case, it is the omission of a scraping blade that stands out. As a result of that, this brush may struggle to tackle very baked-on and tough debris on the grill.
The other thing that always worries us with bristle-based brush designs is losing those bristles while cleaning the grill top. Keep an eye for any shed bristles during cleaning, and you can offset that issue to a large degree.
- checkComes at a budget-friendly price
- checkStrong and sturdy design
- checkEasy to clean
- checkWorks on various grill types
- checkSafe to use on porcelain grates
- checkMore surface area than most grill brushes
- No scraper blade
- Bristles can dislodge
So, that concludes our list of five of the best grill brush tools out there. Now, the problem is, how do you know which one is the right grill brush for you? What are the things to take into consideration? In this next section, we are going to take a good look at some of the features that make up a good brush and help you select the model that best suits your needs. After that, we’ll answer some of the most frequently asked questions about these useful tools, and you should be all set!
There are two types of grill brushes out there on the market. We have those with bristles and those of a bristle-free design. You will find devotees to both kinds of brush, but broadly speaking, there are pros and cons to each type.
Bristle brushes, for example, are easy to clean, but can occasionally lose their bristles. If they get stuck to the grill, someone can end up eating an unpleasant bristle burger. You can certainly offset this a little by checking the grill each time you brush it for any discarded bristles. However, they can be pretty hard to spot.
A bristle-free design will often be great at scraping away stubborn baked-on debris. On the other hand, because of the compacted nature of their construction, they can be harder to clean, with food waste left trapped in their metal coils.
Bristle-free grill brushes can also be very stiff. This means that to get the brush to clean the sides of the grill bars, you may need to push down with more pressure to get the brush head to conform to the bar grills.
There is only one dimension that counts when it comes to grill brushes, and that is the length of the product. The longer the brush, the more of the grill surface can be cleaned with your hand and arm out of the heat directly above the grill. It can also allow you to place more leverage onto the grill surface for better scrubbing power.
At the same time, a brush that is too long will be difficult to maneuver over the surface of a smaller grill. Brushes typically come with lengths between 12 and 18 inches, so we suggest you choose one that is appropriate for the size of your grilling area. A full-size, 18-inch brush will be perfect for a large, family-sized grill, while smaller brushes are the better choice for medium to smaller grills.
To us, item weight is not that much of a priority. After all, these brushes are just that—brushes. They only typically weigh a few ounces, and you likely won’t be holding or using them long enough to cause discomfort.
The only exception to this rule is if you like to put a lot of pressure on your brush as you scrub your grill. In that instance, it could be better to go for a heavyweight brush (with wood instead of a plastic handle) to take that weight.
Again, there are only two materials to choose from here: brass or stainless steel. Most brushes will be made from stainless steel. As a result, you get a brush that is tough, resilient to rust, and does a great job of scrubbing grills clean. It can be a little too abrasive for some surfaces, though.
Brass is a material that is far less seen, though it is still out there on the market. A brass grill brush will be much kinder to the surfaces it is scrubbing, making it a better option for more vulnerable materials like ceramic-coated cast iron.
Price will generally be your indicator of quality, and it is most applicable to traditional, bristle styles of brushes. With these brushes, a low-quality model can start to shed bristles. They, in turn, can get stuck to the grill and end up in someone’s burger, which is, obviously, not very ideal!
A good-quality brush, such as those found on our list above, will be tough, long-lasting, and provide a useful cleaning aid for many years to come.
Ease of Cleaning
One final feature to bear in mind is ease of cleaning. Let’s face it: cleaning the grill is not exactly a fun task to take on, which is why we’re guessing you’re reading this guide for a quality brush to make it easier!
The thing is, though, if the brush itself is hard to clean, then it will just make the whole task even longer and more tedious. To aid brush cleaning, look for models that have relatively wide spacing in the brush or bristle placement. That extra space will help you rinse and clean away collected debris.
Brushes that are dishwasher-safe are, sadly, few and far between. However, we love to see that as a feature whenever we can find it.
Grill Brush FAQs
How to clean a grill brush?
Cleaning the grill brush is almost as important as cleaning the grill itself, as you will struggle to get a premium cleaning performance from a dirty brush. Luckily, cleaning these brushes is relatively simple and easy to do.
For the most part, the best way to clean your brush is to hold the brush head under fast-flowing, clean, and hot water from the faucet. This will dislodge most oil, dirt, and debris from it.
Alternatively, it can also be a good idea to buy a cheap toothbrush and use this to clean the bristles with. They are quite rare, but for a very convenient clean, look out for brushes that are dishwasher-safe.
How to clean grill grates?
Heat and steam will help you to clean your grill with minimal effort. How is it done? First, heat up the grill as if you were cooking on it. Bring a bucket or bowl of clean water and dip your brush into it. Once the grill is heated up, start scrubbing.
Use the power of the steam to lift dirt and debris more efficiently. Remember to dip your brush frequently to rinse off dirt and get more clean water onto the hot grill. Continue doing this until you are satisfied with how clean your grill is.
What to use to clean a grill?
In addition to your brush and warm water, as we talked about above, there is another secret weapon you should consider investing in for a sparkling grill—white vinegar! How can you do this?
Simply add the white vinegar to the water at a ratio of 80 to 20 (water to vinegar) and the steam produced on the hot grill will have incredible dirt-lifting powers. Just make sure to wipe the grill down with clean water when you’re done to avoid any vinegar aftertaste being spread to your food!
What is a wire brush?
Very simply, a wire brush is a brush where the brush head materials are made of metal wire—usually, stainless Steel; sometimes, brass. It works in the same way as a normal brush, but it has far more power to lift really dried-on food. There is not much dirt that will survive a scrubbing with a wire brush!
How to clean a stainless steel grill?
You do need to take care with stainless steel grills as they can be scratched easily. The grill itself is usually fine, as scratching here won’t be a huge issue. With that said, it could be an idea to start with a softer material grill brush like brass.
If the BBQ itself is made of stainless steel (the walls, legs, backboard area), these should only be cleaned with soft cloths and non-abrasive cleaners.
Picking the best grill brush out of this list was certainly a challenge! We have five high-quality items here, all vying for the top spot and they can’t all take it!
In the end, we’ve gone for the BBQ-Aid Barbecue Grill Brush as the overall winner. We really liked that wooden handle, which lent the brush a high-quality feel. It also made it feel strong and sturdy, as well as really gave the impression of a brush that is going to have a long and useful lifespan for you.
While it may not be cheap, for a relatively small investment, you can look forward to a clean grill without having to scrub away for hours. Now, that is a pretty good deal, don’t you think?
